The Adolescence Education Programme (AEP) is an important initiative that aims to empower young people with accurate, age appropriate and culturally relevant information, promote healthy attitudes and develop skills to enable them to respond to real life situations in positive and responsible ways. National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) co-ordinates the program and works through both curricular and co-curricular formats to contribute toward holistic development of young people in pursuance of the National Curriculum Framework, 2005. National Popular Education Programme (NPEP) is being implemented in 30 States and Union Territories. It aims to develop awareness and positive attitude toward population and development issues leading to responsible behavior among students and teachers and, indirectly, among parents and the community at large. Imparting authentic knowledge to learners about Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) concerns, inculcating positive attitude and developing appropriate life skills for responsible behavior are also the objectives of NPEP. NCERT is also the coordinating agency of Adolescence Education Programme (AEP) supported by UNFPA and the same is being implemented by 6 national agencies: National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).
